Five Creative Ways to Liven up Your Cocktail Hour

So your guests have celebrated as you’ve said “I Do!” and have watched as you walked, skipped or shimmied back up the aisle. But what happens to your friends and family after that? A cocktail hour is not just a time to keep your loved ones happy while you are occupied after your ceremony, it is a fantastic opportunity to provide entertainment and give them a glimpse of the fun that you have planned for them. After all, a great wedding is the one your guests will remember! Here are 5 creative ways to liven up your cocktail hour:

1. Incorporate Games and Activity Stations

Now is the time to go dig out your board game stash. Who doesn’t love a good board game? Just make sure to stick to the games that are multi-player and go quickly, everyone should get a chance to play. Lawn games are also fantastic if your cocktail hour is set outside, think croquet, bocce ball, horseshoes and cornhole. Games aren’t your thing? No worries! You can still add interest by setting up stations like a Polaroid guest book station or a signature cigar and scotch bar- Fun and fancy!

2. Offer Local Wine or Artisanal Beer Tastings

Depending on your venue, tastings or pairings may be available. This is a lovely option for guests that are attending a winery or brewery wedding; it also encourages your guests to sample local fare, which is always a good thing.

3. Hire Live Musicians

Nothing sets the mood like live music! Whether you prefer a classical guitarist, a string quartet or an 80’s cover band, quality live music will keep your guests moving. Keep in mind that there are plenty of live musicians that are willing to only perform during your cocktail hour, that way you don’t feel pressured to hire them for your entire night- unless of course you want to!

 4. Include a Photo Booth or a Slow-Mo Video Booth

Allow your guests to get silly and strike a pose! Not only will these booths keep your friends and family entertained, it will create memories for you and them alike! Can you imagine?! Your Grandmother wearing a hot pink feathered boa and over-sized glasses, FABULOUS! Again, certain companies will offer photo or slow-motion video booths for hourly hire, which can help keep you within your budget.

5. Spice up Your Hors D’oeuvres

Now for the really good part- food! Fun food is always a crowd pleaser. We are big fans of anything miniature, think mini tacos, gazpacho shooters or portobello sliders. Food trucks are charming, exciting and are sure to make a statement. Seasonal options are always a fan favorite as well. Who wouldn’t love a hot cocoa bar or a gourmet s’mores station? Can you tell we’re getting hungry!?
